Maritime Security Expo - Northcentral University Call For Papers

Overall: The Maritime Security Expo 08' in Long Beach California on November 18-19, 2008.
Purpose: To solicit creative ideas and analysis from the international community of academics, students, analysts, researchers and industry related to developing strategies to disrupt maritime piracy and its threat to the international maritime supply chain. This will be achieved through two different contests, one designed for students (both undergraduate and graduate), and one for professionals (academics/industry/law enforcement/military). Two separate awards will be judged.
Topic: In the past two years maritime piracy has continued to grow. The number of attacks and the level of violence has increased steadily. What strategy should be developed by the world community to counter maritime piracy and increase the security of the international maritime supply chain?
Timeline:
- July 1: 175-word Abstract due to whitepapers@maritimesecurityexpo.com
- August 1: Final paper submitted to whitepapers@maritimesecurityexpo.com
- October 1: Evaluation and judging completed by Northcentral University Homeland Security Faculty & Outside Panel- winners announced
- November 18: Both award recipients will be provided 20 minutes for live presentation during the conference to present their findings. Abstract to be published in the December MSE electronic newsletter.
- November 19: Paper to be published and distributed on the second day of the Expo.
Details and Guidelines for submission:
- Papers will be 9 - 11 pages long, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, submitted as a Word document to whitepapers@maritimesecurityexpo.com.
- Writers will provide their submissions in English using APA or MLA format.
- Abstracts will be no more than 175 words.
- Titles must be 12 or less words.
- Presenters will not be allowed to promote a specific company or product.
- All entries will include a cover page with the author's name, address, and contact information. The author's name shall not appear anywhere else in the paper.
- Papers will be evaluated using TurnItIn to prevent fraudulent submissions. No paper will be evaluated that has been accepted for or actually published or that is based on a manuscript that has already been accepted for publication or actually published.
- This will be a double blind review. NCU will provide members of the school's Homeland Security faculty, coupled with outside Subject Matter Experts, who will evaluate the papers in four areas. The percentage that will be applied to each of the four evaluations criteria include:
- Originality (20%)
- Research methods (20%)
- Content/Organization/Analysis (50%)
- Adherence to APA/MLA editorial standards (10%)

Two winners will be announced for the International Maritime Security Expo & NCU White Paper contest:
Contest #1: Open to Professionals (academics/industry/law enforcement/military)
- $1,000 (U.S.)
- Opportunity to have their work presented at the 2008 Maritime Security Expo
- A plaque from Maritime Security Expo and Northcentral University
- Paper published and distributed on the second day of the Expo
Contest #2: Open to Students (undergraduate and graduate less than 25 years of age)
- $500 (U.S.)
- Opportunity to have their work presented at the 2008 Maritime Security Expo
- A plaque from Maritime Security Expo and Northcentral University
- Paper published and distributed on the second day of the Expo
Papers deserving of honorable mention and merit will also be recognized.
All papers judged compliant with contest rules will be published in a proceeding of the expo. All papers become the property of E.J. Krause & Associates, Inc.
